Middle Aged Fat Guys
   © 2003 Lon Jones

They were standing by the water
With not much on but their suntan cream
They were wearing those string things
Roasting their buns and soaking up beams

We decided by vote, unanimously
They were savory
So we floated by
With twenty four bottles of bravery

Ahoy little ladies!
There’s plenty of room in our pleasure craft
They looked at us a second, and sang this little song
And then they laughed

Your skin is pale
You’ve got big bellies and baseball caps
You’re Middle Aged Fat Guys
Out on the lake in a rubber raft

Favorite Face
   © 2003 Dale Jones

Here in my mind’s eye, I keep a portrait
That Chesire smile leaves an enigmatic trace
Right out of my dreams into my waking days
Comes the one who wears my Favorite Face

A full moon bigger than the back of God’s hand
Draws a gull out to sea
On the ebbing tide, it flies back to shore
And you turn your face to me

Like a rose on a summer night
Fills a breeze with perfume
It draws a moth to the flower’s heart
Like my soul is drawn to you

Here in my mind’s eye, I keep a portrait
That Chesire smile leaves an enigmatic trace
Right out of my dreams into my waking days
Comes the one who wears my Favorite Face

You lit the lantern in my heart
With a rosy glow of sunrise
It colors your face, it lights my days
I see it in your eyes

Seasons change, brightest flowers fade
Mountains bow to the sea
Temples fall, armies turn to chaff
Still your face would call to me

Across the gulf spanned by Gods and dreams
Across all space and time
My restless soul would fly across the void
To have your face next to mine

In the park, as our dogs played
My broken heart clumsily displayed
My burning tears had long since dried
But my hopes of love were fading

A kindly face, a gentle hand
My heart resumed its dreaming
Did you know?
Did you know that you’d win my heart?
Did you know?

Here in my mind’s eye, I keep a portrait
That Chesire smile leaves an enigmatic trace
Right out of my dreams into my waking days
Comes the one who wears my Favorite Face

High Maintenance
   © 2003 Dan Pettis

I won’t talk to you
If you can’t talk to me
In a way that doesn’t ricochet
In a strange and peculiar way

I wonder what you see
I wonder why it’s me
Who spoils you like a rotten kid
Forgives you all the things you did

You keep thumbing your nose up
At every good feeling that shows up
Until the day I’m turning my toes up
You’re putting me down

You mumble a little Freudian slip
About our relationship
Then you funnel it through a microscope
With some codependent way to cope

You can’t follow through
With any little thing you do
That doesn’t involve a shopping mall
Or guzzling down the alcohol

You’ll spend the night getting blasted
The rest of us try getting past it
But the Drama King will cover your assets
When you put him down

Your loser friends, they worship you
(Apothecary, Dignitary)
But they don’t know you like I do
When your world comes tumbling down
They’re nowhere to be found

Hey girl, it’s time to go
Daddy’s going to take you home
And put his little girl to bed
Forgive her all the things she said

The next day, she looks in the mirror
The lines on her face, getting clearer
I hope that she can live with the terror
That’s bringing her down

Hey girl, who’s watching you?

Velcro Days
   © 2003 Dan Pettis

Keep me in the dark
Cause I don’t want to know what the paper says
I’d rather hold my ears and shut my eyes

The messages on T.V.
They don’t mean too much to me
If it’s true today, eventually it’s lies

Shut out those images
Shut down those savages
Paradox statistics day to day

They’re altering your dreams
So nothing’s what it seems
We’re living our lives in turmoil

Kids are logging in
To their computers through the skin
Extremities won’t be needed anymore

Unless they’re out for fun
By packing a loaded gun
Junior could leave you lying on the floor

Cybernet sensations
Gameboys and Playstations
Nintendo leaves our children in a daze
Attention spans are gone and everything’s a yawn
We’re living our lives in Velcro Days

We used to tie our shoes
And learn to read in schools
We’re living our lives in Velcro Days

Not All Truth
   © 2003 Dale Jones

It’s not all truth, it’s not all lies
Don’t waste your breath making alibis
For whatever scheme that you devise
To make it line up for you
To point the compass true
And find True North for you

It’s not all good, it’s not all bad
Subterranean bully, no cosmic dad
No Billy The Kid, no Galahad
Can plumb the line straight for you
A look at the broader view
Might lead you to what is true

Can’t see the stars and the lamp won’t light
All of your fears getting multiplied
Searching for truth demands introspection
Sometimes when you wander, you discover direction

It’s not all this, it’s not all that
That makes The South Wind want to blow off your hat
It’s in the way you meet the wind
The way that you tilt your chin
If you keep your head too straight
You can’t navigate

Can’t see the stars and the lamp won’t light
All of your fears getting multiplied
Searching for truth demands introspection
Sometimes when you wander, you discover direction

But don’t bend the rules just to win the fight
Pursuing the end when the means aren’t right
You lose your way when you lose sight
Of whatever lit the light
At the heart of your Truth, so bright
And helped you choose wrong and right

An Offer
   © 2003 Dan Pettis

Tell me what you’re seeking
Have I been so unsure of what you want from me?
Could you tell me, please?

Have I been holding on to
A love I don’t belong to?
Is it wrong to say,
I can never get you back in my life?

Gonna change your mind
     I’ve been working on it
Give it a little more time
     I’ve been thinking ‘bout it
I’m gonna make you an offer you can’t refuse

Ain’t this one silly situation
There’s a lack of communication
We don’t talk enough when the goin’s rough

You’re someone I can depend on
You’re too good to lose, and still my friend
I love you anyway
Yeah, you always get me through the day

Gonna change your mind
     Been working on it
Give it a little more time
     I’ve been thinking ‘bout it
I’m gonna make you an offer you can’t refuse

You can tell the world that you’re leaving
You can tell your friends we’re through
But I’m telling you that it’s killing me

So, I’m gonna sit, relax a while
Put down a couple of drinks and smile
Cause I can’t take it, won’t make it while you’re gone
No, I couldn’t last too long

Gonna change your mind
     Been working on it
Give it a little more time
     I’ve been thinking ‘bout it
I’m gonna make you an offer you can’t refuse

You Lashed Out
   © 2003 Dale Jones

We made love once in the garden
But the garden still grew thorns
No matter how I cut them back
They always sprouted more

But the seeds of discontent were sown
And they grew like angry weeds
You whipped them thorns across my heart
And even now I bleed

You lashed out when you were angry
You lashed out when you were bored
You lashed out when you were wrong or right
You lashed out when you wanted more

Golden rings and empty promises
Like “Forever and a Day”
Commitment means more than words and rings
It’s a lifetime that you stay

There’s a ring sized hole inside my heart
And my vows they taste like stone
You grabbed your hat, walked out the back
You couldn’t get more gone

You walked out when you were angry
You walked out when you were bored
You walked out when you were wrong or right
You walked out when you wanted more

The chapters of the life we wrote
Have been ripped out of my soul
But the story that I am writing now
Is about love and joy and hope

Sometimes I miss the history
Of the life we tried to build
But I got back my future
That’s a dream I will fulfill

I’ll move on to what I’m seeking
I’ll move on and rise above
I’ll move on to what my life will bring
I’ll move on to what I love

Randy's Ashes
   © 2003 Dan Pettis

We made a team and shared a dream
Glad you let me
I could make you laugh, lead you down the path
I’m glad you let me

There’s no place that I would rather be
Than that place that we called you and me
As I stroll the canyons far and wide
An echo calls my name

I dried your tears and faced your fears
Glad you let me
You weren’t alone, we even shared a home
I’m glad you let me

I keep flashing back on yesterday
And anytime before you went away
There’s not a day goes by that I don’t cry
My world gets torn apart

Someday, I’m going to climb right out of this chair
And get back into my life
On a day that I don’t see you there
Hovering over me, still bonded by the chemistry
Making up adventures that are stories
That were never meant to be

As I stroll the canyons far and wide
An echo calls my name

Randy’s Ashes are six feet down
But I don’t put flowers on his grave
I feel his presence on sacred ground
Way back up in the wilderness
Places that we were our best
Making up adventures that are stories
That were never meant to be

I See Stars
© 2003 Lon Jones and Dan Pettis

I see stars when I think of you
Other worlds come into view
I see stars in the daylight
When I think of you

Nebula glowing in the night
Milky Way comes into sight
I never saw these things
Till I saw you

Like a lost planet
Searching for a shining sun
In the cold and dark so long
One day I fell into a warm light
I fell into a love so warm

Galaxies spin slowly ‘round
We may never come back down
Far out past the blue skies
I see a star dream come true
Far out past the blue skies
I see a star dream

Fluids
© 2003 Dan Pettis, Lon Jones and Dale Jones

Consume, partake, or chug-a-lug
From a corkscrew bottle or a whiskey jug
We got fluids trickling through our bodies

A long syringe or an open mouth
We can pump some in and then we pump some out
We got fluids trickling through our bodies
We got fluids oozing through our bodies

The coffee bean is my favorite urge
It winds me up, such incredible surge
Though it costs too much, I will always splurge
You see, it is my fluid fantasy

When the sun goes down, then I change me tune
I drink tequila liquor off a silver spoon
Then I fly so high and I howl at the moon
You see, it is my fluid fantasy

We guzzle our way up to the pump
We give them our cash, they fill it up
We got fluids running through our engines

We burn it up, it make us cough
It’s back to the pump, they rip us off
We got fluids running through our engines
We got fluids gumming up our engines

Oh, we go so slow on the interstate
We want to drive fast so we won’t be late
We seem to be in molasses state congealed
Don’t leave me stuck behind the wheel

At the roadside stop, where I read the map
Cause I drove too far, and now I can’t get back
The coffee cup falls in my lap, I scream
This ain’t the way it’s ‘spose to be

Fluids, Ooo
Fluids, Oooooozze
Fluids, Ooo
Fluids, Oooooozze

Three Cold Stones
   © 2003 Dale Jones

Three brothers played, one day by a stream
Usually quiet, most days, serene
But springtime was pouring out of the hills
The stream was a tiger with a stomach to fill

The youngest fell in, it swept him away
The others jumped after, we lost them that day

Three cold stones with one sad date
Laughing at hope, frozen in fate
A trio of angels standing above
The face of the Mother and a broken winged dove

A person stands helpless, in total dismay
When faced with the prospects fate throws our way
We storm or we bargain, we scream or we pray
Wear guilt like a mantle, due penance to repay

Some search for a lifetime, but they never find
A moment of comfort to quiet their mind

Three cold stones with one sad date
Laughing at hope, frozen in fate
A trio of angels standing above
The face of the Mother and a broken winged dove

Sent out my prayer in a grove of oak trees
To find understanding of events such as these
A crow stole the words, took them up to the moon
She sent down an answer in a long soundless tune

It took half my life to hear her song
I don’t like the answer, but I send it along

In a quiet graveyard, on a hill, by a stream
That murmurs so softly as it runs to the sea
Where seagulls and shorebirds float by in the breeze
Which whispers the answer to the voice of the stream

“I feed all my children, I govern their fate
I hold them, I love them, I take them away”

Three cold stones with one sad date
Laughing at hope, frozen in fate
A trio of angels standing above
The face of the Mother and a broken winged dove

Cartwheels in the Sky
   © 2003 Dan Pettis

Will you go with me, far beyond the sea
In search of heaven
Some old friends live there, somewhere in the air
They wouldn’t have left me here

Hold my hand, we’ll rise through the clouds
Cartwheels in the sky
In my dream, the warp drive kicks in
Beyond this place in time

You’re the special one
Takes me further on than I imagine
I feel so alive
When you fly inside my head and dream with me

Bodies collide to Brahms’ Lullaby
Rainbows fall at our feet
Crashing waves, both master and slave
Nothing will repeat

When we fly too far, past the nearest star
Burning up as we melt into dust
And become a ray of sun

Stuck on Both Sides
   © 2003 Dale Jones

It’s tempting to think, that we won’t repeat
The actions that opened the abyss at our feet
That just this one time we try to obey
Follow our best intentions, our sense of fair play

We’re stuck on both sides of a thorny divide
A bramble that holds you by a thorn in your side
Never ending vendettas, never ending crusades
Barbs of fear and suspicion, generations of hate

He fights for freedom, he’s the angel of death
He’s guilty of treason and all you allege
He’s the people’s great hero, he’ll have freedom or death
He’s the face of a nightmare, he’ll use silver or lead

Politicians will hide behind lies and assertions
Only history can find the truth behind the curtain

We’re stuck on both sides, we’re stuck on both sides
There’s your side, there’s my side
And the wrong side that history won’t hide

We’d all like to know the wrong from the right
Cause it’s never so clean as just black and white
But such clear divides so rarely occur
We stumble through shadow and with our demons confer

Years of senseless atrocities that are followed in kind
I murder your children while you murder mine
If you go back in time, you won’t find the cause
You’ll just find the chasm that we can’t seem to cross

He fights for freedom, he’s the angel of death
He’s guilty of treason and all you allege
He’s the people’s great hero, he’ll have freedom or death
He’s the face of a nightmare, he’ll use silver or lead

Politicians will hide behind lies and assertions
Only history can find the truth behind the curtain

We’re stuck on both sides, we’re stuck on both sides
There’s your side, there’s my side
And the wrong side that history won’t hide

We’re on to your lies, we’re on to your lies
There’s small lies, there’s white lies
And the big lies that history won’t hide

Hanging Over Jordan
   © 2003 Dan Pettis

If I find me a place in heaven
Won’t be coming home

It’s tough to make a living
It’s hard to make ends meet
I work so hard my fingers burn
Get blisters on my feet

Yet I barely raise the family
Can’t afford to buy a home
I’m raising kids and paying bills
And the Feds won’t leave me alone

Hanging over Jordan’s river
And I feel like letting go
If I find me a place in heaven
Won’t be coming home

I wonder how it happened
I wonder why I’ve changed
You don’t know what you’re made of
Till your life gets rearranged

Friends don’t come around much
The kids don’t ever call
You give so much you lose yourself
Is it really worth it all?

Hanging over Jordan’s river
And I feel like letting go
If I find me a place in heaven
Won’t be coming home
