Dale: Those darn pirates boarded us and started
singing before we could mount an effective defense.

Dan - Bass, organ, electric piano, backup vocal
Jeff - Wurlie piano, bass vocal
Lon - Lead vocal, recorder, electric guitar, backup vocal
Steve Shroy - Drums
Don Thompson - Electric guitar

| Commentary

Dan: It's about three people rolled into one. It's amazing that I managed to stay off the booze. Lonnie, I really like the vocal. It comes off a little less sarcastic and more playful than my own interpretation.
Dale: Banjo and recorder? Are you kidding? Sounds cool though. And it's
nice to hear one of Jeff's rare performances on keyboards. I think Don's
guitar really drives the tune.

Lon - Slide guitar, backup vocal
Jeff - Bass
Marty McCray - Drums

Dale - Vocal, banjo and percussion
Lon - Vocal
Steve Shroy- Drums
Peter Moss- Tenor and baritone sax

Dan: An old one from the Cock 'n' Bull days circa 1980. I'm glad we revisited.

Favorite Face
Dale Jones and Gail Nosek
|
Dale - Lead vocal, acoustic guitars and percussion
Lon - mandolins, backup vocal
Dan - Keyboards
Jeff - Bass, backup vocal
|
| Commentary
|
Dale: This is based on a line that Gail came up with. That "du-it du-it" percussion sound is an udu, an African clay drum, and it's just about my favorite
percussion instrument.
Dan: I like the layers in the mix. This one really sounds like old Cock 'n' Bull. Fabulous Mandolins, doctor.

Dale - Vocal, percussion, bass, banjo
Lon - Vocal
The Bullhorns
Brad Henninberg - Trumpet

Dan: I was on a rant. It's fun to bitch about the media. Everything has to be a quick fix, nowadays. For God's sake, save the children.

You Lashed Out
Dale Jones
|
Dale - Lead Vocal, acoustic guitar, banjo, percussion Lon -
Recorder, mandolin, vocal Dan - Electronic drums and percussion,
organ, fake mellotron, backup vocal Jeff - Bass, backup vocal
|
| Commentary
|
Dale: I wrote this too close to my divorce and the anger is palpable.
Emotionally it's honest, but maybe the premise is unfair. Maybe it needs a
subtitle: You Lashed Out (And I Don't Blame You).

Lon - Lead and backup vocal Dan - Piano and synthesizers, programming Dale - Backup
vocal, ethereal guitar choking Jeff - Cocktail drums, backup vocal, bass vocal Peter
Moss - Tenor sax Doug Durbrow - Mark Tree

| Commentary
|
Dan: I found some lyrics in my archives by Lon. I vaguely remembered a melody he composed twenty some years ago that fits with these lyrics. I Dannytized it and presented it to the other Dozers. The old boys put their stamp on it and there you be.
Dale: At least we got something from studying jazz vocals with Hal Malcolm.
Thanks Hal!

Pettis, Lon Jones and Dale Jones
|
Jeff - Lead and backup vocal, bass, noises Dan
- Vocal, keyboards, noises Lon - Vocal, noises Dale - Vocal,
banjo, percussion, programming, noises
|
| Commentary
|
Dan: Another 1980s leftover. This has the goofy charm of the old band. This was an absolute ball to record. Who was that accordion player?
Dale: All those noises were impromptu and in retrospect they need to be
there.

| Commentary
|
Dale: When I was about ten, my cousin David told me the story about The Three Brothers
while we were standing in a graveyard right next to Mill Creek which was
rushing by not ten feet away. It scared the living shit out of me. Fast forward about thirty-five years. I
was talking to David at Thanksgiving and I told him that I had
written a song based on that old story. I had always assumed the story was
apochryphal and just intended to scare little boys away from Mill Creek in
the springtime. And he said, "Oh, you mean the story about the Vowel
brothers?" It turns out that the story is basically true. The Vowel
brothers all drowned in one tragic accident, although not quite in the
dramatic way described in the song. I dedicate the song to the Vowel family and
hope that it honors the memory of their lost children.

Stuck on Both
Sides Dale Jones
|
Dale - Lead and backup vocal, electric guitars, banjo, percussion Lon
- Synthesizer, backup vocal Dan - Lead and backup vocal, organ,
synthesizers Jeff - Lead and backup vocal, bass Steve Shroy - Drums
|
| Commentary
|
Dale: This is about Northern Ireland, the Israelis and the Palestinians, the
former Yugoslav Republic, and every other ancient and bloody conflict fueled
by religion, racial tension, or real politik. This is our history as
humanity and is probably going to be our future. If there is such a thing as
original sin it's probably our ability to participate in what Simone de Beavoir
calls the "willing creation of The Other." Once we create The
Other, they're no longer human and the stage is set for committing any sort
of atrocity we can imagine. And we're stuck on both sides.
Dan: This is some heavy shit. Dale, you get to be our John Lennon.

|
Dan - Vocal, vocal arrangement, and synthesizers Lon - Lead vocal, classical
guitar Jeff - Bass Dale - Vocal, acoustic guitars,
percussion
|
| Commentary
|
Dan: A strange song about flying dreams. Mine were always intense. I wanted voices that sounded like Seals & Crofts meets the Four Freshman. I got real close with the "Jones Tones." I really dig the guitar solos.
